CONTAMINATED VICTIM RESPONSE PROCEDURES

Chemicals Spilled Over a Large Area of the Body

Quickly remove all contaminated clothing while using the safety shower or other available source of water. Clothing should be removed in a manner so it does not go over the head, possibly contaminating the eyes, mouth, and other sensitive areas of the face.

Immediately flood the affected body area in cold water for at least 15 minutes.

Wash off chemical with water but do not use neutralizing chemicals, unguents, creams, lotions or salves.

Seek medical attention.

Small-Scale Skin Contamination

Immediately flush with water for 15 minutes.

If a delayed reaction is noted (often the next day), report immediately for medical attention and explain carefully what chemicals were involved.

If there is any concern that the contamination has resulted in a health effect, seek immediate medical attention.

Chemicals in the Eyes

Irrigate with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Use eyewash or other water source.

Simultaneously check for and remove contact lenses.

Get medical attention promptly.

Ingestion of Hazardous Chemicals

Identify the chemical ingested.

Call for the local Poison Information Center.

DO NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by specific safety literature.

Rinse mouth with water.

DO NOT induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious individual.

Cover injured person to prevent shock.

Inhalation of Chemicals

Provide fresh air immediately.

Administer CPR or oxygen only if trained to do so.

Medical attention must be sought for contaminated individuals after significant inhalation exposures, or in the event that minor exposures produce any adverse health effect not resolved by basic first aid.
